Starting as a joint overnight leader with American Danielle Kang and South Korean Jenny Shin, Nomura made two substantial moves. In the middle stretch, the Tokyo golfer carded four birdies in six holes in a streak that began on the par-five fifth.

Defending champion Ko then challenged on the back nine, with three birdies in five holes leaving the New Zealander just one stroke adrift.

But Nomura responded by firing three consecutive birdies from the 15th hole to secure a breakthrough victory and the $195,000 winner’s prize.
